Community

“Jesus loved, and in love, he served. As Jesus’ followers, we in turn serve him and one another with hearts set ablaze by his love.”

Otterbein UMC of Spry has served the community for over 140 years and continues our outreach today through the Angel Food Ministries and Food Bank, offering meeting facilities for Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Alcoholics Anonymous, and the Public Pot Pie Dinners and Annual Yard Sale to fund our mission programs.

Otterbein has an active Hospitality committee. Every March and October, they have an all you can eat Chicken Pot Pie Supper open to the public. The meal includes homemade pot pie, homemade pepper slaw, homemade applesauce, homemade cake, rolls and drink. The committee also creates a new cookbook every several years. They are also active in other aspects of the church. The profits from their work goes to worthwhile projects within the church. They recently paid to have the sanctuary painted and gutted the parlor, transforming it into a meeting room.

The Missions committee has a HUGE indoor yard sale for 2 days every April. Starting in 2010, the committee will also have a September yard sale. They work on this all year. Members, friends, and unknowns donate all types of goodies and "junk" to this worthwhile cause. "One person's junk is another person's treasure." A bake sale, homemade chicken corn soup, sandwiches and drinks are available both days. We donate proceeds to missionaries, Mission Central, Global AIDS, Cup of Water Fund, Bridge of Hope, Haiti Outreach, United Methodist Children's Home, Lehman Center, Access York, and the York Rescue Mission.
