What We Believe

We believe that all people have been made to know, love, and serve God. We share with other Christians our belief in the Triune God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The good news of the gospel is that God the Father has sent His Son Jesus Christ into the world to redeem us from the power of sin and death and to give us the Holy Spirit as our comforter and constant guide. By grace through faith in Christ, we receive God's gift of salvation and actually come to participate in God's own life! We affirm the authority of Scripture and hold to the historic Christian faith, as summarized principally in the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed. We believe in a life-giving, personal relationship with Jesus Christ and that through the ministry of the Church we reflect God's love in service and witness to the wider world. History

Otterbein United Methodist Church of Spry officially began in 1860 utilizing an old schoolhouse and private dwellings as places of worship until 1870 when a lot was purchased and a building was erected. It was dedicated in August 1870. Prior to 1860, United Brethren ministers occasionally visited Innersville (now Spry PA) as early as 1797.

Old Otterbein UMC of Spry churchA new white frame church building was built on the foundation of the previous building with a 24 x 18 foot addition in 1897. The church included a tower and steeple with a 1,000 lb McShane bell. The Spry United Brethren Church served the community until 1968 when the United Brethren Church and Methodist church merged and became Otterbein United Methodist Church of Spry.

Current Otterbein UMC of Spry church The current Fellowship Hall was built in 1967 where worship services were held until the completion of the new Sanctuary in 1978. The McShane bell was moved after the demolition of the old building whose foundation is the current Scout building. The Conaway Bell Tower was erected and dedicated May 8, 1983 and holds the McShane bell which can be rung and plays music twice daily through the sound system with Carrilon chimes.

Otterbein UMC of Spry continues its proud heritage of service to the community based on the strong foundation of our past and our ongoing commitment to making disciples for Jesus Christ.
